                   JACKSON'S CHAMELEON

SCIENTIFIC NAME :-     Chamaeleo jacksonii
OCCURRENCE :-            Uganda,Tanzania to N.Mozambique
HABITAT :-                   Savanna vegetation
SIZE :-                          Length 11 to 12 cm
FAMILY :-                     Chamaeleonidae








GENERAL CHARACTERISTICS :-

  1. It is an arboreal green coloured lizard with a body flattened from side to side , large protuberant eyes and a muscular prehensile tail.
  2. The male has three prominent horns on the head and the female has only one small horn and a snout and rudimentary horns by each eye.
  3. The eyes can be moved independently of one another to locate the prey.
  4. It has the ability to change the colour of its skin for camouflage purposes.
  5. The protrusible tongue with a sticky pad in the front helps to capture insects which is the main food.
  6. The female lays about 20-40 eggs out of which only 10 or so young survive.
